Dear all of you lovely, darling humans,
I saw a short video today on Facebook that gave this basic message... "If we want to stop the spread of this virus, we all should behave like we already have it, rather than behaving like we are trying not to get it."
I have also been paying close attention to other yoga studios and teachers whom I know. Not all of them are canceling in-person classes yet. But many are. And it feels like we are all headed in that direction.
Even though my classes are pretty small, it only takes one person to inadvertently infect multiple others. And with testing not being easily accessible, it's best if we play it safe for the sake of the vulnerable, and for the sake of our health care system and it's providers/workers.
So it has become crystal clear to me that in order to do my part to help "flatten the curve" I need to teach ONLY online/virtual classes, for at least 2 weeks. There will be no in-person classes at my studio through March 29 at the earliest. (This date is of course subject to change.) All classes currently on the schedule will be offered virtually/online through Zoom (more info below).
I'm so sorry that this is going to impact many of you who don't have access to computers or high speed internet. But it is better to be a little inconvenienced now rather than having to deal with a bigger, broader, longer and possibly tragic impact later.
I know there are many who are being put in a very difficult financial position because of event cancellations, work closings, etc. As a small local business that depends on seeing students and clients regularly for my income, this decision feels kind of scary. And yet I know it is necessary. If you have the means to send a little financial support my way during this time by signing up for some classes or an online coaching session, I would greatly appreciate it. (Those of you who already have a class card, you can use that for any of the online classes.)
However, I will never turn anyone away who wants to take a class and doesn't have the financial means. Right now, we all need some reminders to breathe. We need spaces to connect intentionally with our bodies, and tools to calm and re-regulate our nervous systems. All of these things will help our immune systems be stronger and more resilient to infection/germs/disease. I feel grateful that these are things that I can offer to you during this time! So without further ado, here is how the online classes work...

French Lick Class
The French Lick class will be postponed for now. We will try to start it at the church location on April 2 or 9, depending on how things are going with the containment of the virus. However, I would be willing to offer a virtual class at the scheduled class time (Thursdays at 6pm) for those who would like to take the class online. Please let me know! I can start it this week or next with the online class if there is interest.
Wen-Do Women's Self-Defense
This training is postponed for now. We are planning to reschedule in the summer or fall this year.
In closing, here are more beautiful words to help you balance any spinning fear lodged in your head with the grounding remembrance & inherent connectedness of your heart. (Thanks to Andy Gerber for finding and sharing this poem.)
Pandemic: A poem by Rev. Dr. Lynn Ungar, poet and minister.PandemicWhat if you thought of it as the Jews consider the Sabbath— the most sacred of times. Cease from travel. Cease from buying and selling. Give up, just for now, on trying to make the world different than it is. Sing. Pray. Touch only those to whom you commit your life. Center down. And when your body has become still, reach out with your heart. Know that we are connected in ways that are terrifying and beautiful. (You could hardly deny it now.) Know that our lives are in one another’s hands. (Surely, that has come clear.)Do not reach out your hands. Reach out your heart. Reach out your words. Reach out all the tendrils of compassion that move, invisibly, where we cannot touch.Promise this world your love-- for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, so long as we all shall live.
Let's use this time to Make a Retreat of Our Lives.
Take care of your body.
Move, Stretch, Feed yourself nourishing food and drink lots of water.
And reach out with your Heart.
May you be strong, healthy, and well.
